Donations to nearly every type of charity faltered in 2008, as contributions declined by 5.7 percent last year after adjustment for inflation, according to the new edition of Giving USA which was released Wednesday morning.

It was the steepest decline in the history of the survey, which has been conducted since 1956. (You can ask questions of the Giving USA authors and veteran fund-raising experts in a live, online discussion at noon Eastern time on Wednesday.)  [Via Philanthropy.com]

Again, not surprising. The last time there was a drop around 5% in charitable giving was 1974, when the oil price dramatically rose, and there was in increase in consumer and producer inflation–similar to today’s economic time.
